1982: Welsh miners back healthcare workers

Miners of the South Wales coalfield went on strike in support of health service workers’ pay rise demands on 16 June 1982.

Miners downed tools in recognition of health workers as allies in their battle against government policies.

In Cardiff, hospital pickets were backed up by members of the National Union of Seamen.

Organisers reported more than 15,000 people marched through the streets of Cardiff in the biggest demonstration of support the workers had seen.

Originally broadcast on 16 June 1982.
