1964: India's first prime minister dies

Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, dies from a heart attack, 27 May 1964.

News of his death was broken to the lower house of parliament, the Lok Sabha, by cabinet minister Chidambaram Subramaniam. In a broken voice, he told colleagues, 鈥淭he Prime Minister is no more. The light is out.鈥

Within two hours of the announcement, tens of thousands of people had gathered at Mr Nehru鈥檚 mansion in New Delhi. In a long procession, which lasted into the night, nearly 250,000 people filed past to pay their respects.
