James Boyce reports from this pretty Quaker village on the opening of new public toilets.
The amenities are built on the site of the old fountain in the town square. John Grubb Richardson established the modern Bessbrook in 1845 as a model village based on Quaker ideals. The selling of alcohol was prohibited and amenities such as schools, a dispensary and a community centre were provided for the workers in his linen mill.
This village was the inspiration for later examples built by Cadbury at Bournville and Rowntree's at New Earswick.
