1999: Queen opens Scottish Parliament

The Queen opens the first Scottish Parliament for 300 years, on 1 July 1999.

The ceremony is held in the General Assembly Hall on The Mound in Edinburgh, where Members of the Scottish Parliament met until the opening of the Scottish Parliament Building at Holyrood in 2004.

As the Queen closes her speech, a specially-commissioned mace is unveiled, marking the parliament's authority.
