Major Prentice, interviewed in 1966, describes his flight from the RMS Titanic following her fatal collision with an iceberg. He relates how some women refused to leave their husbands despite being given priority in the lifeboats, and how he was rescued after a perilous 100ft drop from the stern of the ship as she went down.

The picture (courtesy of Mary Evans Picture Library) shows survivors from the Titanic as photographed from the deck of the Carparthia.
