1987: Superpower treaty to scrap warheads
The United States and USSR announce a treaty to scrap over 1,000 weapons.
The arms to be dismantled under the treaty are all short and medium-range missiles based in Europe and the Soviet Union. This affects warheads stored at the site of England鈥檚 longest-running anti-nuclear protest at Greenham Common.
The Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty 1987 would later be signed by USSR leader Mikhail Gorbachev and US President Ronald Reagan.
