1994: Tony Blair elected Labour Party leader

Tony Blair is elected as leader of the Labour Party in July 1994.

The 41-year-old MP for Sedgefield secured 57% of the vote.

The election followed the unexpected death of John Smith two months earlier.

It was the first secret leadership ballot of all four million Labour Party members and union levy payers - without block voting by the unions.
