The coal allowance

The coal allowance, a ton at a time, was left on the pavement outside the house. My father took it in a wheelbarrow around to the coal house. My mother helped with buckets.

He was very fussy arranging the coal in his own special way. My mother always wore a sacking apron for this job and for washing down the pavement and the backyard afterwards.
