Local deliveries

By Merle Thomas, Cwmbran

I remember having provisions delivered to the house. We had milk delivered from a local farmer. His wife, Nellie the milk, brought it around in a pony and trap and we would have to take a jug with us to be filled from the churn. Rowe delivered fruit and veg from a horse and cart and Jenkins the oil; which became Arthur Llewelyn Jenkins the up-market furniture shop, delivered oil and small household goods.

The most colourful character came on a Saturday morning selling cockles and laverbread. A woman would come round to sell them from a large basket carried on her head.
