American service men in town.

By Mansel Rees, Aberdare

During early 1944 the American Service men camped in Aberaman. They had a shed for their canteen at the top of Bute Street, Aberdare. As children we were always trying to scrounge sweets or asking the men 'have you any gum chum?'

The men had a drum of boiling water to scald their eating utensils when the coalman's horse bolted and knocked over the drum - two young children were scalded, and one of them sadly died. That was another sad price of war.
