Bullet For My Valentine interview (2008)

Bullet For My Valentine

Another album, another HMV signing in Cardiff. This time we talk to singer Matt Tuck and drummer Moose at midnight.

Last updated: 26 November 2008

So, you're about to go and sign copies of your new album, Scream Aim Fire at midnight...

Moose: I'm normally in bed at this time!

Matt: Yeah, it's good though; it's exciting - the count-down to our new album, like! It's been a long time coming so, yeah, I'm very excited - I can't wait. This album is definitely better than the first.

This will be the first time you've tested public appetite, as The Poison was a slow-burner. Is that something that makes you nervous?

Moose: Yeah, the last one was a slow burner, so this is our first taste of people rushing out to buy our record. In Japan it went straight to number one, so for us, having a number one album is weird! And in a different country is even weirder. But we're not nervous.

Matt: We're the only British metal band who have made an impact worldwide for the last 10 or so, maybe more. It's cool!

To a degree, that must be because you mix metal with pop more than virtually any other band...

Matt: The pop element to our music is totally a natural thing, it's what we've always done you know; it's even what the name kind of represents. We always write the music first, then the lyrics and the melodies later

The music sets it up and whatever I feel like doing, whatever I think the song needs, I'll sing that. I don't care if it's care if it's pop or thrashy... I write what's best for the song.

What makes this album different from The Poison?

Matt: I think this album is definitely better than The Poison: our skills have improved individually and plus as a band we've been playing for many years now especially the last three years on the live circuit.

I understand what made The Poison a success; we've tried to take those elements and recreate them: take the right ingredients and make them better really.

Moose: It's harder, faster, better, stronger!
