Released in November 1966, The Green Green Grass Of Home was Tom Jones' second Number One single and his only Christmas chart-topper.
The song had been written two years earlier by Claude 'Curly' Putnam Jr and had already been performed by Porter Wagoner, Bobby Dare and Jerry Lee Lewis by the time Tom got his lungs on it.
Lyrically, it tells the story of a man who describes his sweetheart and the eponymous green, green grass of home, but wakes to realise his memories are but a dream and he's actually in a prison cell on the day of his execution.
That the theme of the song is often missed puts it in a similar bracket to Tom's song Delilah, which sees a cuckolded man stabbing his partner in revenge after seeing her silhouetted and inflagrante.
