One Armed Bandit
The next day we got up and quickly got in the water at Lacanau. Conditions had changed as the wind had turned cross shore and the waves were a little bigger, about 3-4ft. The waves were a bit messier but still had the same punch and speed. Some nice waves had and a few nice wipeouts too! After the surf we decided to pack up and head south. The journey south didn't take that long although we were sure we were flashed by a speed camera...still haven't heard anything!
Got to the border and was a little worried as we thought security would be tight! Pulled up and a nice lady asked us a few questions. "Where were we going, what we were doing and for how long" That was it, didn't even have to show our passports, Alright!!!! On and into Spain. First glance at the Pyrenees - wow what a sight. The motorway was very windy and cut through numerous mountains and tunnels. Got to Bilboa and kept going onwards...
Arrived at Playa de Ajo, oh my word, first sight of the sea and what a sight! Pretty big and really really powerful. Decided not to go in as there were no other surfers in. Travelled around and came across a beach called Playa de Berria. Wanted to go in but the campsite was closed and time was marching on and we needed a place to stay. The campsite was in between the beach and the jail!
We headed into the nearby town of Ris and eventually found a campsite. It was here we encountered our first problem with the language barrier. The owner did not speak a word of English and ourselves not a word of Spanish. Frequent hand gestures and production of a phrase book quickly correctly the situation. It was getting dark but decided to try and get in for a surf at Playa de Ris.
It was a town beach which got very busy. The surf was a good 3-4ft but unfortunately had areally bad shore break closeout. There was hardly any ride which was very frustrating seeing as we had come all this way. After the surf we went out and met a few Austrians who were into their surfing. Couldn't really understand it as they are a landlocked nation!
