  53. Flood warning

Areas affected: Groundwater flooding for the Till

    ACTIVE

Started at: 15:13 GMT on Fri 24 January

Flooding is expected - immediate action required

Groundwater levels in Salisbury Plain are high and are forecast to rise further early next week. Areas that could be affected include: Tilshead, Orcheston, Shrewton and Berwick St James. The groundwater level at the Tilshead borehole has risen to 97.3m, and is expected to rise further early next week due to rainfall over the weekend, with around 17-50mm expected to fall over 3 days.

Residents are advised to prepare property resilience measures over the weekend and ensure that pumps are working where they have been installed. Residents may experience inundation of septic tanks and sewer systems. Properties may experience flooding in cellars in affected areas.

Flooding of roads is expected, take particular care when driving, both for your own safety and to prevent flooding to others. Roads may have become damaged by floodwater.

Where groundwater is near the surface, intense rainfall will lead to surface water flooding. We will continue to monitor the situation closely.

The water level in the Danes Stream is very high. In the last 24 hours, more than half a month’s rain (50 mm) has been recorded at Stem Lane. Gardens at Milford on Sea High Street, may also be affected. No impacts are expected at Ashley. It is currently high tide at Lymington, which will act to reduce the river’s capacity to drain to the sea until 11:00 this morning (27/01/2025). Over the next few days, showers will continue to affect the area with up to 15mm expected. The level in the river should reduce after high tide. We continue to monitor the forecast. We have checked Milford Dam is operating. Please keep away from the riverside footpaths in Milford on Sea, especially at Milford Bridge opposite Lucerne Road. ACTIVE

Started at: 08:49 GMT on Mon 27 January

Flooding is possible - be prepared

The River Arun is high and rising between Broadbridge Heath and Pulborough, following Sunday's rain. Minor flood impacts are already affecting fields and gardens of isolated mill properties between Broadbridge Heath and Pallingham Quay. From 11:00 on 27/01/2025, flood water could affect gardens of properties at Pallingham Lock. In Horsham, river levels are higher than normal, but are already falling, and minimal flood impacts should reduce. Scattered showers are possible Monday and Tuesday. While probably not enough to increase flood risk, the showers might slow the river fall. The river should begin to fall near Broadbridge Heath by 10:00 on 27/01/2025, but not until 22:00 near Pallingham. River levels could remain higher than normal all week in Pallingham, but should return nearer to normal in all other communities by Tuesday 28/01/2025. Flood protection products are recommended to be installed in Wanford, if you have them. Our automatic sluice at Provender Mill is operating to help reduce the risk of flooding through Horsham. The water level in the Tadburn Lake at Botley Road is high. Heavy rain has fallen over the last 24 hours with 32 mm recorded at Romsey. This is close to half a month's rain on a wet catchment. This morning, surface water flooding may affect property at the top of the river near Jenner Way and Sewards Rise. This could occur as very high levels in the river prevent water on land from draining to the river channel. Showers may continue to affect the area over the next 24 hours. While the river remains high any additional rain may not drain into the river. Our operational staff are checking the flood defence walls remain undamaged and are ensuring the river is free of blockages. The water level in the River Lymington at Brockenhurst is high and rising. Over the last 24 hours, 30mm of rain has been recorded in Brockenhurst. This is a very large volume in a short period of time. This morning (27/01/2025) the river will be much higher than normal and drainage ditches through the New Forest will be flooding land and roads, including Burley Road, Brockenhurst. It will be bank full as it flows through Martin’s Road and Balmer Lawn Road and may cause garden flooding at Balmer Lawn Road. In Lymington itself, the river will rise over the next 10 hours, but we do not expect impacts to property. Further showery rain is forecast over the next 24 hours so the river could remain higher than normal for the next 36 hours before water levels fall. We continue to monitor the forecast and will ensure the river remains free of any reported blockages. Given an unsettled outlook, properties located nearest to the river should take appropriate action to ensure they can protect property. This Flood Alert will be updated at 18:00 on 28/01/2025.

Flows in the Lower River Itchen at Mansbridge are high and increasing. In the last 12 hours, 15 mm of rain has been recorded at Portswood. Monday morning's high tide at 09:30 and 10:48 on 27/01/25 in Southampton, is higher than normal due to unsettled weather increasing tide table values by 1.02 m. The total forecast tide is 5.14 metres Chart Datum (2.40 mAOD) at Southampton. For 1.5 hours either side of high water, the incoming tide will prevent the river from flowing to sea. This may cause the river to flood the access road and affect the car park near to the White Swan Pub at Mansbridge. Footpath flooding may also affect Riverside Park. Further rainfall is expected overnight and into the early hours of tomorrow morning (27/01/25). Flows in the river will remain high over the next few days, and impacts could occur at each high tide. We continue to monitor the forecast. We recommend closing the defence gates around the pub at least an hour before high tide. This Flood Alert will be updated by 14:00 on Monday 27/01/25.

A small amount of water could find its way behind the beach and may pond on nearby land and fields including at Climping Street Car Park and Mill Lane. Waves could cause overtopping of the beach. A small amount of water may then flow or be directed westwards along Mill Lane (from the right of the East car park) towards residential property in Climping Street. Monday evening's tide at 22:00 27/01/2025 is forecast to be 7 cm lower (2.57 mAOD). Similar flood impacts are predicted to continue each high tide until Tuesday 28/01/2025. We continue to monitor the forecast and routinely check the condition of the beach at Climping. Access could be restricted during and after high tide. Monday morning's tide at 09:30 on 27/01/2025 is higher than normal due to unsettled weather with strong South Westerly Force 6 winds and large waves. The weather increases tide table values by 0.93 m. The total forecast tide is 3.84 metres Chart Datum (1.25 mAOD) at Cowes. For 1 hour either side of high water, large waves will cause spray overtopping and over washing of defences across the exposed coast at Freshwater Bay, Sandown, Shanklin, Gurnard and Ryde. This will flood esplanades, sea front car parks and roads in these locations. As Cowes is sheltered from waves, impacts, if any, will be minimal. We do not expect property flooding. Monday evening's tide at 22:12 on 27/01/2025 is forecast to be 30 cm lower. No further flood impacts are expected. We continue to monitor the forecast. Groundwater levels are above normal for this time of year and are at a level where communities may be affected by groundwater flooding. We expect levels to continue rising slowly and levels will remain sensitive to further sustained rainfall. Low-lying land, cellars and roads will therefore continue to be at risk of flooding.

Due to the nature of groundwater flooding, this situation could continue for several weeks or longer. We are continuing to monitor groundwater levels and will update this message next week, 28/01/2025, or as the situation changes.
