"This wooden hand and foot form part of the collection held at STEAM.听 They are certainly not what would spring to mind when thinking of the Great Western Railway. However the hand and foot tell an important part of GWR, and more specifically Swindon Works history. "Employment at Swindon Works, building locomotives and rolling stock, was heavy and often dangerous work.听 Accidents happened and sometimes workers were injured, and in the more serious cases, lost a limb.听
"The GWR went some way to make amends for such injuries by providing the unfortunate worker with a new wooden limb, and where possible, moving them to a more sedentary job.听 Hands, feet, arms and legs were made at the Carriage Shop at Swindon Works, by the same carpenters who spent their days making carriages, station benches, carts and the like. "These wooden hands and feet are an intriguing sight to visitors to the Museum and cause a mixture of horror and fascination when they realise what they are and why they are on display at STEAM."
