Trowbridge's Mystery Lady

Curator's Choice: It took 22 years to identify the artist but who the lady in the portrait is... remains a mystery

Trowbridge Museum

"This is my favourite object. It's beautifully executed and a lovely subject but we have no idea who the young woman is so she is a lady of mystery.

"The work has been in the Museum's collection since 1986, some four years before the Museum was developed and opened to the public.

"The artist was Eden Upton Eddis (1812-1901) an English painter whose work was regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy. He painted such worthies as Lord Macaulay and Archbishop Sumner and the National Portrait Gallery hold several examples of his work."
