Episode 190: Talk

Tim at the cafe

Optimism

Tim and Sally are talking about being optimistic.

What kind of person are you? Are you a glass half-full (optimistic) or a glass half-empty (pessimistic) person?
Do you think your attitude affects the outcome of events?
How would the world be if everyone was optimistic all the time?

This topic has now closed. Thanks for all your comments.

Yacirah, Angola
i dont tkink that i am neither a glass half-full optimist, either a glass half-empty person ,most of the time it depend of the situation that you are facing in the moment it s inportant to be realistic, too.i am sure that my attitude affects deeply the outcome of events according as ,our thoughts influence in our lives,to some extent, the saying goes sound mind body are.

Morena, Argentina
Well, I think I麓m a glass half-full person, that makes every day you can think about different plans and things to do. But who don麓t get up some days a glass half-empty person?

Darek, Poland
I am trying to be a glass-full person. Sometimes it is not easy but in most cases I can manage to keep that way. I agree with opinion that attitude affects the outcome of the events. Optimistic approach makes me willing to get up in the morning and face a hard reality, gives me a faith that everything is going to get better at some point.

Winters Tam, Hong kong
There isn't a absolute way to define who are a glass half-full (optimistic) or a glass half-empty (pessimistic) person, honestly it's up to what is the situation going, but without it,i think i may be a glass half-empty person sometime, and i may be a glass half-full person if the situation is looking good.

Olivia, France
I am an optimistic person, well sometimes I tried to be. In fact, when you are confronted to many problems at the same time, it is quite hard to keep in mind that everything is just fine, and you're going through it. But, at the same time, I think that if you have a pessimistic behaviour, you are going to stay with low feelings, and it will be more harder to get out of your problems. Optimistic is not the solution, but it helps to find them out!

Ale, Italy
Sometime it's difficult to wake up and look things on the bright side, sometime life enjoys messing all up. But even when you are back to square one you need to think in a positive way. How can you go on without looking for a silver lining?

Irenka, Russia
Mostly I find myself a glass half-full person and I think it's good because the positive thinking allows us to live our life in a happier way. Sometimes I feel pessimistic and it's a normal thing too. Only fools see things as all is always well or all is always bad and every healthy personality needs to experience both positive and negative moments. The main thing is not to become a wet blanket. I guess the world would be better if everyone was optimistic all the time, but it's so unreal. Life has never been a bed of roses, but let's look on the bright side, as every cloud's got a silver lining it is possible for us to cross that bridge when we come to it.

Lu, Greece
This is impossible that all of people think that glass can be half-empty, because people are really different. It will be good if everybody think in positive way. But people who see the glass are half-empty, they also are really important because life is not a bed of roses. In my case it depends of my mood, but I really try be happy and see the bright side of my life.

Marta, Argentina
Sometimes I am a glass half-full person,it depends of the situation, but the most of time I try to be an optimistic woman, its not easy, but,by all means,I do the best for being in a good mood, although the world and life isn't a bed of roses

Karol, Poland
I am a glass half-empty kind of person. Pessimism motivates me to work harder and focus on every detail of my task. And with this attitude I'm never dissapointed with the outcome, I can only be suprised! Maybe the world would be better if everyone, including me, was optimistic.. People would be more happy and some of them would be more enthusiastic. On the other hand, people like me would be often dissapointed when things don't go on their way. Anyway, It's a good question for philosophers while I have a scientific mind :)

Carme, Spain
There is a sentence in my country that says "An optimistic is just a pessimistic without information"And I'm agree

Vivian, China
I am neither a optimistic nor pessimistic person. Different situation I hold different attitude. But attitude does affect a lot in the outcome of events. That's why I think I shold always look on the bright side and be a glass half-full girl, then my dream of becoming a confident, capable and independent lady will come true. But I don't think anybody can be optimistic all the time. Life shold be a lot of ups and downs.

Lila, Vietnam
I am more of a pessimistic person than the optimistic one. I try to look at the bright side of the problems that I have to solve, but it just doesn't work. I know that some stuff happened in the past and I should move forward and not just sitting and thinking about that.'Do you think your attitude affects the outcome of events?' - Yeah, sometimes. It would be great if all the people around the world were optimistic. There are such kind of problems like wars, violence used on children( I feel great pity for them :/ ), incurable diseases ect. The world would be better with such optimism.

Jum, Thailand
In personally, I'm a glass half-full. I think if our world would be the greatest place to live if evryone was optimistic. When you do something wrong, you don't feel so down to you can't do the other things in your life. You think carefully and inspire yourself to do better. As the result, our world be full with the kindness people to creat the beautiful environment.

Rahaf, Syria
Sometimes I am a glass half-full person and sometimes not. It depends on the situation. I think your attitude often affects the outcome of events. I think when the problem happens the most important thing is to be positive person. When you think in positive way you often find the proper solution. I think it's important to lead your psychological condition in positive way when troubles come.I think we shouldn't be optimistic all the time. Negative thinking is useful sometimes. I think negative people can be good critics and that helps to improve things.

Thao, Vietnam
Smile shall fade my sadness. When I face the difficulties which I suppose I could not overcome them, the best way to relieve my pains is that i naturally. In my head, there's always a thought that everything shall be better. If i have lived in it for ever, it may be get me frightened and obsessed. I self-remind that difficulties only are challenges. As well as I need to affirm who i am, i do all my best to defeat them.

Gislaine, Brazil
In general I try to be an optimistic person, but is very hard for me. I'm always thinking about what can go wrong and I will do when it happens. The result so far is that, I have avoid some headaches for sure, however, my blood pressure is high, I have OCD,and it seems I can't relax a minute a day. I would like so much being an optimistic person.

Faratin, Iran
I severely believe that to be optimistic& honest is not good practice nowadays because,if i had not been optimistic, compassionate & considerate I would not have seen lots of troubles in my life.It would be better to be pessimistic in order to protect your self from many scams.regards.Faratin

Jose Morais, Brazil
I AM A GLASS HALF-FULL,ALL TIME.I BIELIVE THAT THE WORLD WOULD BE BETTER,BUT DEPENDS ON US.IN BRAZIL,NOWADAYS, THE PEOPLE BIELIVE MORE AND MORE IN OUR COUNTRY.

Ellea, France
I am a glass half-full person and that makes me as happy as Larry. I wouldn't think about problems which don't even exist. I learnt that one's imagination is not the reflect of the reality and most of the time nothing really happens. If yes, it is only a coincidence. There is no reason that I have to make myself unhappy. I appreciate what I have and what I am. I am an human being with strengths AND weaknesses.

Aoi, Japan
I think I am neither optimistic nor pessimistic. Whatever happens, I try to look at it from all its aspects. Whether optimistic or pessimistic doesn't matter so much to me. Pessimism will help us wake up to the severe reality and optimism will prevent us from just complaing about it and help us put them into action.Clearly it's like day and night. Sunlight is good and moonlight is beautiful too, isn't it??

Stameda AG
I must say that in general I,m a glass half-full person and I believe this attitude has been very helpful in my life all the time. Up to now I,d faced many tough problems or really sad situations which I only could overcome by staying optimistic and don,t act as a glass half-empty person. And today I,m convinced that my optimism had been a crucial attitude every time influencing the outcome of events to my advantage. On the contrary if everyone in the world was optimistic all the time I guess that world would not get better because a only optimistic world is a pessimistic world since objection is a fundamental condition in the world and for our existence as well, but there must be an inequality in favour of optimism to have a more active and prosperous world where everyone has a chance of access to a optimistic life.

Cheong, HongKong
It depends on a day. If someone praise me to do a right thing, I will become an optimistic man. If someone critize me to do a wrong thing, I will become a pessimistic guy.

Chiara, Italy
Hi everybody! I personally believe, as many of you said, that is necessary to have and somehow "build" inside ourselves an optimistic attitude to drive our intentions in the world. It's quite foolish to think that this is the best possible world, there're so many things to change! and to do it we need to feel that we really have some accessible choices as well as the possibility to catch good opportunities even in bad situations.

Lisa Loginova, Russia
Well, actually I don't know whether I'm a glass half-full or a glass half-empty. As I think I'm both. But I'm trying to be more optimistic especially if I'm on some events, because I pretty concerned that my mood can easily affects the outcome. But if everyone had been optimistic, it would be inversely related situation. In which our mood will goes up, but our economical, environmental, etc. stability will go down.

Rahaf, Syria
Sometimes I am a glass half-full person and sometimes not. It depends on the situation. I think almost your attitude affects the outcome of events. I think when the problem happens the most important thing is to be positive person. When you think in positive way you often find the proper solution. I think it's important to lead your psychological condition in positive way when troubles come.I think we shouldn't be optimistic all the time. Negative way in thinking is useful sometimes. I think negative people can be good critics and that helps to improve things.

Nora, Germany
They say, a pessimist is an optimist with experience. That's true, isn't it?

Shirley HUI, Hong Kong
Comparison are my people and the mood changed as occasionally. I do not know this, so long as to have fun every day is like, and have been looking forward to ... ...I occasionally think my attitude will affect the results, so I am sorry, but I will control myself, so things have a perfect ending. If everyone has a positive attitude, I think the world would be beautiful and harmonious. NOT disputes between people, live in harmony with each other, this is the most perfect of the world!

Betty Leung, Hong Kong
I am an optimistic person.Yes, I think my attitude affects the outcome of events.I feel optimistic. If people feel optimistic, it would be much better. For example, it can decrease the war.We can do anything.

Waldemar
I'm optimistic becouse we have a spring.I'm always a glass half-full person. But I thing my attitude not affecet any events. If everyone was optimistic the world would be crazy.

Didi, Albania
I'm a glass half-full person mostly of the time.I try to think positively over the situation and try to see the lesson in it.I'm sure that our attitude affects the outcome of events. The world will be a better place if everyone is optimistic all the time-it's my opinion.

jean Marie, France
I definitely prefer being a glass half full person and I try and live in this way. I am sure that affects positively the behaviour of the persons around me hence the events which will be managed by all of us. But it would be stupid to pretend being optimistic could directly affect the outcomes of events. It is the well known joke about the man who had been falling from the top of a skyscraper and would have been saying, passing by every window, "for the time being everythings is all right" I would not be surprised if he had thought that on the ground a lorry had been loading out a stack of big mattresses. How would be the world if everyone was optimistic all the time, I imagine :-) rather disgusted sidewalks splashed by the fall of unconscious people.

Qanh, Vietnam
I'm not very pessimistic fortunately. I know that every cloud's got a silver lining. However,I reckon I shouldn't cross the bridge when I come to it because I won't be prepared for anything 'on the other side of the bridge'.

Mauro Meazza, Italy
i'm a glass half-empty person.i don't think the world would be better if everyone was optimistic because you can't always think that everything will go for the better.

Yangbae Lee, Seoul Korea
I think I'm a glass of half-full person.Merriam-Webster Dictionary saying "optimism is a doctrine that this world is the best possible world." Optimism helps people look at the better side of things. A pessimistic person looks at the glass as being half-empty. If we are optimistic, we look at the glass as being half-full.Imagine how much better this world would be if everyone was optimistic. I feel optimism can help stop war and violence.

Tereza, Czech Republic
In general, I麓m more optimist than pessimist. I very often tend to panicking when something bad happens but after a while I gradually can see the positives of whole thing. I don麓t think it would be good if everyone was optimistic all the time - nobody would care about problems and our quality of life would get worse. I think we need a little of pessimistic thinking.

Kim, South Korea
Whenever I meet problems, I think of bright side and not pushing things too fast. But I usually deal with that problem too optimistically. Surely, I don't get stressed out. But sometimes it effect to me in the negative.Optimistice person, pessimistice person whatever, it's good to us when proper.

Patri颅cia, Brazil
Sometimes I'm a glass half-full girl, sometimes I became a glass half-empty. It's depends of my mood or the situation. I think being optimistic it's a good way to live but, being optimistic all the time can drive us to an unreal way of life.

Mr Stone
Honestly, it depends on the case I am being in. Normally, when standing out of another's story I was trying to be a glass half-full man. However, as something bad happened to me. I often think the worst thing coming next. For the second question, in my opinion, I suppose that the attitude is very important before doing something. I assume if we think that we are never successful, I am sure we won't do anything. Nothing is impossible. Attitude is more valuable than what you think. You should have a positive belief and don't think that you will fail. This world will be much more beautiful if all people on the planet was optimistic. The way everyone behaves each other is more polite and gentle. There won't be many suicide. In fact, being a optimistic person when facing the sad and difficult problems is not easy. Some of them look the bright side or they avoid to take to a wet blanket :-). Life is not a bed of roses. Keep in mind, we won't be afraid any thing and don't worry too much about the future. We'll cross the bridge when we come to it.

Dario, Italy
I have always been a half-empty person, but I have changed lately. Now I understand that if you are pessimistic, your life will always be negative, but just because you make it seem like this. If everyone was optimistic all the time, everybody would be happy and without any worry.

Ahmed, Iraq
I am a glass half-full and I thing people mshould think thus to help people's morale high. Thank you..

Silvia, Spain
I think I'm neither optimistic nor pessimistic, and it depends on the situation. I'm a very pragmatic person and see life in a realistic way. But of course, I try to face problems and to look for another way when things go wrong and of course, when possible.

Anto, Italy
Regarding other people than me I always speak and act as a glass half-full kind of person. Unfortunately though, me too I need support and when I can't get it I feel like a glass half-empty person. In any case if everyone was optimistic it would be a disaster.

Thienloi, Vietnam
Basically,I'm one glass half-full kind of a guy. Thank to this attitude , I got some advances in my life. I do believe what we get is the award of our efforts. Keep trying best, think positively , your life will be easier. But, sometime, you must prepare carefully to don't stick into the foolish mistake. It save your time and your money .

June, Mexico
Everything woul be very different, weather, people, and relashionships.

Matthias, Germany
I'm a glass half-full person most of the time. I try to think positiv in my live, because our daily live isn't easy. It's complicated at work and home. The most people in business need English more or less. I need English, too. I'm not good in English but on the other hand, I think keep it simple now and work on myself to improve my second language. I believe it will be better for me, my live and my English.

Imge, Turkey
I am sometimes optimistic and sometimes pessimistic.I am neither too optimistic nor too pessimistic.Yes,I think my attitude affects the outcome of events. For example, when my friends start fighting,if I remain calm the fight finishes earlier than its normal time. The world would become a place where people cannot live if everyone was optimistic all the time. These are my opinion.=)

Teena, United Kingdom
well, To be honest i am a optimistic person. And i agree with the poing that our attitude affects outcome of the events because attitudes are created by perception and perception will decide how the events will accure in the future. The World would not be modernized and we all would be living in a very same way where our forefathers were living. When humans become pessimistic about the things it brings change which is the demand of the modern Ara.Pessimism implies criticism inside which brings improvement in previous things. And one other advantage of pessimism is that it wont let humans satisfied and which will give birth to the new inventions and discoveries. which Optimism is a state of mind where humans get the satisfaction immideately and thus becomes idle and close the doors of the success.Hope Not get bore.. !!Thanking you !!

Tango, Hong Kong
The one who is a glass all-empty is me... but I like optimistic people

Xiaoke, China
I am a glass half-full sometimes, or a glass half-empty person other times.

Shoaib Mamun, UK
That's true, whatever we think affects the result and outcome of an events.Because of lake of confidence most people fail to do something new the first time.If they are really confident of what they do there is rare chance to fail eventhen if it's first time.whoever suffers from inferiroty complex or pessimistic his weakpoint is that they always worry about mistakes. And it's obvious if we think of mistake we'll definetly get a mistake.Once we get a mistake we shouldn't look back but we should try to find out what went wrong and try to improve it.

Qiao, China
I used to be a glass half-empty kind of person but one day I suddenly realised it's useless crying over spilt milk, what had happened cannot be changed so why not just accept the consequence and focus on what we can do next, and be positive of cause!

Nicola, China
Actually,I am a glass half-empty.And I really don't want to live like this anymore. Because I belive that the attitude do affects our action. As everybody knows, when we are happy,we can finish our task quickly.Or else,we would lose the passion to do all the thing. These days,I can't foucus on dong anything because of the bad mood.Maybe,it's time to changemy attitude and just be who I am.

Pari, Iran
I think, to be optimistic is very nice and make life easy, but it's his problem, for example, not to be able to see the reality as it is.

Lily
Most of the time, i am a glss half-full girl. It makes you feel better when things go wrong. Sometimes, only by seeing things from a different angle, you will find it is not too bad. We all will meet some problems in life, however, all of us can finally come throught it.

Ramya, India
I'm a glass half-full kind of a girl. I've a strong belief that what we think will affect what we do which will obviously affect the result of the event. I would say that this belief keeps me as bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. Say example if I think I can definitely improve my English, I'll think about the way of improving English, I'll work hard against my hurdles. These attitudes will improve or it will help me to improve my English and who knows finally One day I may become a teacher for English. Otherwise, if I think I cannot improve it, I won't take any step toward improvisation of my knowledge. If all the people around the world are optimistic, then our earth will be a heaven. There will no war, no terrorism, and no envy. Our earth will be filled up with only peace and happiness.

Olya, Russia
Our attitude of mind can affect how events happen. That is because i try to look on the bright side. For instance I have started learning chineese painting last few days. And even I have been indulged for a short time I am certain that the beautiful helps being more optimistic and happy.

Sukhee Cho, South Korea
I am a glass half-empty kind of girl. Whenever I make a decision about my behavior, I always think of all possible results. Sometimes, It is very helfpul to be careful, on the other hands, it makes me to get stressed out. I think it has its advantages and disadvantages.

Sylvia, China
I am a glass half-full person,I believe, because, even if I failed in the Entrance Exam of Joint-University, I chose another way to prove myself-associate degree in Hong Kong, every coin has two sides, if I always look into the pessimistic side, I would suicide I understand that life is not a bed of roses and variety is the spice of life!! However, it would be terrible if everyone was optimistic all the time, because that may lead to out of control when all the people believe they would success.

Harry, UK
I'm a glass half-full kind of boys. When you have this attitude, any big thing that you want to achieve gets the right directions. And you fill always happy no matter what happen. Its really great idea, where would be we all if everyone around us and in the whole world were optimistic. I think the man may be reached on the moon a century before.

Sunny, S.Korea
Yes, I'm kinda a glass half-full person.I always try to look on the bright side as much as I Can. It makes myself cheerful and energetic. For example, when I confront some works that I can't handle or I'm not capable of, I might try to solve it or at least I don't worry about avoiding or hiding from that. That attidude, I believe, can affect others in a good way.

Yan, NY, USA
I am so glad that I am a glass half-full. I always look on the bright side.^^I DO think that my optimistic attitude affect the outcome of events.^^ For example, my boyfirend has not found a good job for a long time even though he is a MBA student. He really stressed out. I always talk to him, encourage him. I believe he will find a good job one day. He could see the light at the end of the tunnel.^^If everyone was optimistic all the time that must be amusing. The world must fill with laught and happiness.^^Let us always so bright-eyed and bushy tailed!^^

Carla, Brazil
Most of the time I'm a glass half-full person. Optimism is good if you don't use it to just "sit down" and wait that everything is just going to be fine and problems will be solved by itself or pretend that problems and difficulties does not exist. So, in order to make things better I think you need both optimism and positive pro-active attitude. Recently our president made an speach telling that the finantial crisis abroad have been a "Tsunami" but when it arrive in Brazil it would be a "marolinha" (In portuguese = a small wave). In my opinion he've been excessively optimistic and missed the clear signs that no country is immune.

Beatriz, Argentina
I think I am a glass half-full but sometimes when thinking deeply about certain situations I am a bit pessimistic.

Marisela, Venezuela
I consider that I'm an optimistic person, I'm a glass half-full girl. I enjoy looking on the bright side all the time and I don't rub along with someone who is a wet blanket because they seem to be prophets of the disaster. Besides, I believe that, indeed, our life's attitude affect everything we do, if we have a positive attitude it will help us to resolve and put up with problems in a very positive way and we'll be happy. About the last question, I think that if everybody was optimistic, we'd be healthier and show more love to each other, the traffic would be softer and we wouldn't suffer from insomnia. For that reason and more I am a very optimistic person.

Roberta, Italy
Unfortunately, I'm a pessimistic person! I always see a glass half-empty and I'm usually right! If everyone were optimistic all the time the world would surely be better! We'd be happier!

Jaime, Chile
I am a glass half-full person in spite of that I am unemployment. With regard to the attitude directly affects the outcome and are related to our everyday lives. I think so, the world would be different if everyone was optimistic all the time. Around the world there are a lot of problems and concerns,It麓s time that politicians and liders assuming a global attitude, non-individualistic.

Sara, Italy
It depends on I feel inside. Sometime I think I'm an optimistic person, I can see the positive aspects of a bad situation, but in an another time I can consider the same situation in a total different way and see only the negative aspects..it's not so simple than appear..

Evelyne, France
I think I'm a glass half full I look on the bright side and if something bad happens I wait and hope that every cloud 's got a siver lining

Giulio, Italy
I'm an optimistic person. I always see the glass half-full.

Cecilia, Argentine
Hi!I allways try to be a glass half full person. Sometines is difficult, but it worths it. I have like my own phrase, very similar to that we'll cross that bridge when it come to us. Mine is: I will not get Pre occupied, I will occupy when things happend.

Mowlidyare, Cairo
I am glass half-full person always look things at the good side. Yes, but I think taking good attitude will bring you good outcomes. The world would be better place if everyone was look things at the bright side.

Vitoria, Brazil
Whoa!I'm a very optimistic person because when I have a bad situation I always think that it's gone.If you think that you can't do,you won't do because yor mind can change or don't change what are u feeling.I hate math and when I have a math test I study more than another tests and I think that I'll do a good test and when I recive my grade I think "My Good,I could".If the world thinks like me we're going to have a good life for all forever !!!

Iram, Pakistan
i think i am a half glass-full girl..But one have to react according to the situation.Live and react like an optimist would turn the world into heaven.
