When a massive earthquake struck Haiti on 12 January 2010, the ´óÏó´«Ã½'s Mike Thomson was one of the first journalists to report on the devastation it caused.

While there, Mike met a young boy called Hans Charles who was so badly injured that the doctor treating him believed both his legs would have to be amputated and feared he would not survive.

One year on, Mike went in search of Hans and finally tracked him down in Miami.

Hans had been flown to hospital there for emergency surgery just after the earthquake.

For Outlook, Mike spoke to Hans about his extraordinary recovery, and also spoke to his mother Viviane who lost her three other children in the earthquake and says she would find it hard now to return to Haiti.
