This is the regimental badge of the Royal Guernsey Light Infantry (RGLI). The RGLI was a regiment in the British Army during the First World War and was formed from the local Guernsey Militia. Over 3,000 Guernseymen served in France and Belgium during World War One; a staggering number for an island only 25 square miles. Almost 330 died but many more were left physically and mentally wounded. In the close-knit community of Guernsey, almost every family was directly affected by the loss of a young relative. This grief was demonstrated in 1939 when war was brewing again; the States of Guernsey refused to send the Militia to war.
