This National Telephone Directory contains all the telephone numbers of all subscribers in England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales c1894 and many advertisements for telephone use. Its size tells us how elite this form of communication was at the time. My great grandfather, Dan Mullarky, is one of them; he was a jeweller and silversmith in Bradford and it gives his business number. His family had come over from Ireland in the Great Famine. It makes me think about moving with the times and about all those who have made their way in a strange land by using innovation and daring to be modern in order to make a living. Investing in technology seems very ordinary now but I admire his spirit in adopting this 'novelty'. I wonder how large a national directory of all telephone users would be today. I don't suppose I would be able to hold it in one hand. I think it is exciting and descriptive of an age in which communication was to become more important with every passing decade.
