The Mumbles Railway was the first passenger carrying railway in the world. The Swansea foreshore tramcars were the most punctual and effective mode of transport in Swansea. Train times were rarely disrupted, residents confidently set their watches by the Mumbles Railway Timetable.
Electric Tramcars replaced steam locomotives on 2 March 1929 - the line originally being horse drawn. Tramcars could be linked, able to transport many hundreds from Swansea to Mumbles and back again in a short time. The railway finally closed in 1960 and is remembered with great affection. There are plans for a possible new short section from Oystermouth to Mumbles Pier. This cab was discovered abandoned on farm land and was restored for display in the Tramway Centre in Swansea Marina, part of Swansea Museums.
