This privy scoop was used by Montague Abbot, an agricultural labourer and carter from West Oxfordshire.(Neat Enstone)The scoop was used to empty the contents of the privy for use on the garden allotment. The job of emptying the privy was done once a year, on a clear night after harvest. The contents of the privy were mixed with ash from the fire in a pit before being used a fertiliser.
This object reminds us of a time when people were resourceful and everything was put to a good use. Two waste products were combined to produce an excellent fertisliser, with no cost involved and without any need for chemicals.
