These fragments of Roman pottery are amongst many pieces that were uncovered at Silverlands in Buxton, Derbyshire in 1903. Floors from Roman dwellings were also found as was a Roman milestone. The Romans came to Derbyshire in the first century AD. They built forts at Melandra near Glossop, Navio in the Hope Valley, Chesterfield, and Derventio near Derby. As well as these forts they brought writing, the Latin language, the widespread use of coinage and a network of well connected roads.
