The Monkey's Fist is used as an end knot from a heaving line (used for throwing from one location to another), hence the weight of the small rope ball at the end of the knot. Today it is also used as a fancy knot for key rings, jewellery and so on. The knot can be done with or without a central core (such as a round stone or ball bearing) to add extra weight. A Barrel Knot (also known as a Blood Knot) is used for joining to ends of nylon casts or leaders together, whilst maintaining a high proportion of the lines internal strength. Knots can also be purely decorative; an example of this is the Dragonfly Knot. This knot board was made by Mr. Hedley Smith.
