Luohan are Buddhist disciples who have attained wisdom but who remain on earth to help other gain enlightenment. In China there are 16, and sometimes 18, Luohan, represented in Buddhist temples. This almost life size figure of a seated Buddhist luohan wears radiant robes edged with an ornate floral border. He sits in serene contemplation, cross-legged, with hands folded in his lap.
Sir William Burrell purchased this figure from John Sparks in 1944 for 350.00
