My object is a small piece of pottery, showing the right side of a beautifully potted African head. Just 1 inch high, it is part of a collection of Eygptian artefacts given to me by my aunt. Among the many evocative pieces my favourite remains still the head of the African. Every curl of hair is clearly incised; his features stand out as sharp as the day they were formed - but what moves me the most is, when you turn this small piece over - so small that it fits snugly on the tip of my forefinger - you can see moulded in the clay the fingerprint of the forefinger of the Eygptian craftsman who made it. It brings shivers to my spine each time I see those marks. And the connection between him and me is made again and again and again.
