This is a fragment of a 'bearded man' jug or Bellarmine/Bartman jug showing the beard and mouth of the man whose image would have appeared on the neck of the jug. They were used for storing liquids including beer. This piece was found washed up on the beach at Alnmouth Northumberland. Some of the salt glaze remains in the beard and around the edges. How amazing that something made hundreds of years ago should end up in the sand at our feet!
