This is an example of an early pocket watch and demonstrates the craftsmanship of the maker. Pocket watches were often made as a standard item, it was the expense of the case which changed the price. This example has a very elaborate design of silver inlay in a tortoise shell case. What makes this more extraordinary is that this was all made with hand tools and without the aid of artificial light. The very intricate design of leaves and flowers was very carefully created and one mistake would have ruined the whole case. This would have been a very rare watch at the time as very few people could have afforded a pocket watch, especially with such an expensive case.
