I found this clay pipe on my allotment in Newcastle upon Tyne. The land has previously been used as a night soil/rubbish tip so I can't say where the pipe came from originally.
It shows symbols of the Order of Foresters, the photo shows a hart with antlers and some feathered decoration. The other side has a man with a wiggly stick The Order became a Friendly Society whose members paid into a fund to cover sick pay and funeral expenses and which which still exists today.
Clay pipes were easily broken and disposable and I have found many stems and pieces. I was fascinated when this bowl appeared. The manufacture and trade in clay pipes was widespread and stopped when more robust pipes eg briar were made.
