These necklaces were worn by women who lived in Ipswich around 1500 years ago. These necklaces are some of the very personal items buried with women living in the Hadleigh Road area of Ipswich about 1500 years ago. They came with their families across the North Sea from the places that now form part of Germany and Denmark to start a new life in Britain. We may never know the names of the women who wore them but we can see reflections of our own times in them; the coming of immigrants who helped meld our country into the multi-cultural society that it has become, showing us that to be 'English' is to embrace a history of made up of many peoples.
