Alderney Womble

Contributed by ´óÏó´«Ã½ Guernsey Candie Museum Outside Broadcast

Neroli Queripel brought an Alderney Womble to ´óÏó´«Ã½ Guernsey's half-term event for A History of the World.

The original Wombles characters were created by Elizabeth Beresford, who now lives on the island of Alderney - the northernmost island of the Bailiwick of Guernsey. They became famous worldwide through a ´óÏó´«Ã½ TV series narrated by Bernard Cribbins and through the music of Mike Batt, who wrote a series of hit songs for the Wombles in the mid-1970s.

A new series was broadcast in the late 1990s, featuring new characters including one named after Beresford's adopted home.

Neroli would often see the writer and have a chat. One day, during the annual Alderney Week, Beresford read her stories to many children in the island's small cinema. She gave Neroli the little, cuddly Alderney as a gift, which Neroli now treasures.
