Made by famous London design house Aquascutum.This suit was worn by Margaret Thatcher for her formal Downing Street portrait photograph, taken while she was in office as Prime Minister. It is the quintessential Conservative blue suit favoured by Baroness Thatcher, made of royal blue wool crepe with a royal blue silk lining. It comes with two matching 'fichus' or bibs, which tuck inside the front of the jacket so there is no need to wear a blouse. There is a short pencil skirt and pleated 'day' fichu, and a long skirt and beaded evening fichu which could be worn with the blue jacket to create a day outfit or an evening outfit. There is also a matching blue handbag. The suit was made by Aquascutum, a famous London-based couture house and appears in their 1980 catalogue. Margaret Thatcher was born in Grantham, Lincolnshire in 1925, and went on to become Britain's first woman Prime Minister in 1979. She remains one of the most dominant political figures of the twentieth century both nationally and internationally, and holds a life peerage as Baroness Thatcher of Kesteven, in the County of Lincolnshire.
