This silver thimble was brought to ´óÏó´«Ã½ Guernsey's outside broadcast event by Guernsey Museum staff member Jo Dowding. It was used by her grandmother during the occupation of Guernsey by German forces between 1940 and 1945. The holes around its edge demonstrate how often it was used. Sewing was not just a popular but also an essential pastime for islanders during the war. Supplies of clothing were scarce and the 'make do and mend' mentality was prevalent - especially after June 1944, when the Normandy landings closed off the German supply lines.
