This restored urn is one of a number at Alderney Museum uncovered in 1968 at the site of an Early Iron Age pottery. An excavator starting work on the new golf course had destroyed part of the site but a museum volunteer spotted one sherd of prehistoric pottery and the Golf Club stopped the excavation. Careful archaeological work revealed the site of a circular hut whose floor was covered in a layer of charcoal below which was a mass of pottery sherds. It seems that the hut caught fire and the burning roof fell on the pots. This urn would have been used for cremation burials and required a special form of pottery making. Perhaps these urns help to reinforce the local myth that Alderney was a favoured site for burials.
