In the course of digging the foundation of our new school, the builders came across Roman pottery, jewellery and mosaics. One piece of jewellery they found was a very colourful brooch. We have since discovered that it was one of a pair of copper brooches linked by a chain. It was a late Celtic relief decoration and would have been worn by a local chief of the area. There were no buttons to keep your clothes together so they used brooches. These brooches are part of our heritage and show Roman and Celtic influences. It is evident that there were jewellery makers in our area as far back as AD78 and brooches became a fashion item and as the years have gone by, the brooches have become more popular as fashion accessories. Today, brooches are veru popular and are varied in their design and value.
