This theatre programme is from the first performance held at a new Sadler's Wells theatre in January 1931.
There have been six theatres built on this site in Rosebery Avenue. The first 'musick house' was built in 1683 by a Mr Sadler, who also rediscovered monastic springs on his property which were said to have medicinal properties.
The 1930s building was built after Sadler's Wells theatre had been in decline for several years. Its construction was funded through a public appeal and it opened with this performance of Shakespeare's 'Twelfth Night'. The cast included John Gielgud, Ralph Richardson and Valentine Dyall.
The building closed in 1996 to make way for the the present theatre, which opened on the same site in 1998.
