The Brewster Viewer is a Victorian stereo photographic instrument, for the first time people could view the world in 3D, for me it captures very dramatically a lost world. Also it demonstrates how technology was moving into the home. Commercial photographers sold large quantities of the stereo images right through the second half of the nineteenth century into the early twentieth. When most people never travelled far beyond there own locale it brought the wider world into focus, literally! It also show how even simple objects were built with almost scientific instrument quality. The materails used on this example are mahogany and brass, along with good optics. This particular example was retrieved after being in the possession of an ancestor of a butler who worked at Parlington Hall in the 1860's. The photos with it show how a once large Yorkshire Mansion House was in its heyday, before it was demolished over an extended period in the twentieth century.
