This steam locomotive is a member of the Princess Coronation Class, designed by Sir William Stanier and built at Crewe in 1938. 6233 'Duchess of Sutherland' worked express passenger train services such as the 'Royal Scot' for the London Midland & Scottish Railway before becoming part of the British Railways nationalised fleet in 1948. The 'Duchess' and other members of her class were the most powerful passenger steam locomotives working on the British railway network during the 1930s. After being withdrawn for scrap in 1964, 6233 was displayed at a Butlins holiday camp in Scotland, then loaned to Bressingham Steam Museum. 6233 was restored by the Princess Royal Class Locomotive Trust and steamed again in 2001 following a Heritage Lottery grant. 6233 is now regularly used to pull special passenger trains on the UK mainline. In 2002 and 2005, 'Duchess of Sutherland' hauled the Royal Train on two special occasions.
