This object belonged to my mother in law who was a member of the Royal Observer Corps during the Cold War. In an observation bunker there was equipment to detect the position and power of a nuclear explosion. This information could be dialed into this calculator to assess the damage caused. This would then be reported to a central command site.
The observers would have then stayed in the bunker to take more measurements and think about their family and friends outside.
