This is one of four bronze plaques which celebrate the life of Guernseyman Admiral James de Saumarez. The plaques record de Saumarez's numerous Battles which include L'Orient, Cape St Vincent and the Nile - in which he was second in command to Nelson. The plaques were originally attached to the de Saumarez Memorial in Delancey Park, which was funded by public conscription and completed in 1879. The Guernsey granite obelisk stood tall at 99 feet high. On 7th December 1943, German Forces destroyed the Memorial to allow clear sight lines out to sea. The heavy bronze plaques were moved to Castle Cornet where they can still be seen today.
