The original coaches weighed just over one ton and the fastest they could go was up to 12 miles per hour.A replica of the Wells Fargo Overland Stage coach, used in America during the mid-1800s gold rush, coaches like these were used for rapid distribution of gold and other valuable items. Wells, Fargo & Co were a banking and express delivery company but their coaches, often carrying gold dust, gold bars, gold coins, cheques and other valuable items, made them prone to attacks by highway bandits. This replica was built in Spain for spaghetti westerns and other films and is in the style of coaches made by Abbot-Downing and Co. This vehicle was used in the 1966 film Carry On Cowboy starring Sid James, Kenneth Williams and Jim Dale. George Mossman, who donated the carriage to the museum, drove the stagecoach for this film.
