In 1862 the Tadcaster River in Yorkshire flooded the local church. Parishioners were so concerned that this might happen again that they decided to raise funds to move the church 25 yards. One of the ways they raised money was through the sale of special Tadcaster Church 'creamware', manufactured by Hartley Greens & Company. At that time Hartley Greens & Co was a flourishing business, with trade links across Europe and into Russia. My husband's great-grandfather bought this mug as a contribution to the successful fundraising initiative to move Tadcaster Church and this piece of pottery has been passed from generation to generation.
