Ann England, like other young ladies in her time were expected to learn various skills in order to be accepted in Society, one of them being needlework. Ann England would have developed the skill of fine needlework and prior to making the pictured sampler she also made one dated 1830 which was displayed alongside this one of 1836 when the National Art Gallery was opened in Rhodesia in 1954. This 1836 sampler was given to my mother, as part of her inheritance in 1920, when she left England, as a young girl of 12 to go with her father to Rhodesia. My mother left it to me and I brought it back to England in August 2000 and had it re-framed. The Framing House were impressed with the needlework, condition and preservation of the sampler.
