At the rear of the hotel there is the ornate gravestone of the famous trotting mare, Lady Combermere, which on the 10th June 1895 trotted twenty miles inside an hour at the old Manchester racecourse. Her silver hooves can be seen in the hotel bar at The Swan, Bucklow Hill, Knutsford
