This Mine token was given to my grandfather Levi Davies, when he worked at Number 7 Pit in Tylorstown in South Wales. His job was to look after the pit pony's who spent most of their life underground. The reverse of the token has 1066 stamped on it so at any time it would be known which miners were below ground. Like many families trying to escape the life of coalmining in south wales, working on the railways was seen as a safer alternative and my family moved to Wiltshire with the ever expanding railways. My grandfather suffered from coal dust on the lungs and the countryside of Wiltshire was seen as a healthier location for him.West Wiltshire still has a large Welsh population.
