In 1877, the Tynewydd Colliery was inundated with water from an adjoining coal mine. Five men were killed and nine trapped by the flooding. Four of the trapped men were released after eighteen hours but the last five were only rescued after nine days. The heroism of the rescuers was recognised by the award of twenty four Albert Medals, the first time that this medal had been awarded for bravery on land. Three of these medals are on display at Big Pit: National Coal Museum.
