Where the Cross Bath now stands, the Celts revered their goddess Sul, in whose honour the Romans named their spa town, Aquae Sulis. The Cross Spring remains a recognised official sacred site today. Dating back as early as 1106, the bath has been a popular place to visit for curative purposes, with Samuel Pepys even taking its waters in 1668. In 1999, the Cross Bath was restored to a design by Donald Insall Associates as part of the Bath Spa Project and is now an integral part of the Thermae Bath Spa.
