These necklaces were made by Karen refugees from Myanmar (Burma), while they were living in a camp in Thailand. These colourful beaded necklaces were brought to Sheffield by a Karen refugee from Burma. The refugee, Ruby, and her family came to the city in 2006 but before this had lived in a refugee camp in Thailand for 10 years, where these necklaces were made. 'We got a lot of support in the refugee camp - food, medical help and education, but it was not enough for us,' recalls Ruby. 'We still had no hope for the future. My parents decided that for our future they would leave for another country so we came to the UK through the Refugee Gateway Programme in 2006. Life in the UK is safer and more comfortable, but it is very difficult for people who cannot speak and understand the language. We don't want people to forget us and the Karen people who live and fight for their life in Burma.'
