Leicestershire was part of the Danelaw and Leicester was one of the 'five buroughs' along with Derby, Nottingham, Lincoln and Stamford. We know that Vikings must have lived here, but apart from place names there was very little evidence. Since the Portable Antiquities Scheme started recording objects in 2003, Viking period objects have been recorded across the county, especially from the Melton and Leicester areas. This object is a classic Viking period find from Breedon on the Hill, its prescence there may indicate a viking camp or perhaps a raid on the monastery there?
This ingot might have been cast from melted down booty or lots of little pieces of 'hack silver'. Whatever it was made from it was melted down into an ingot to make it easy to transport.
