My grandfather Walter used this spur during his time as a member of the Household Cavalry in World War One. Walter was the only member of a large family to serve in the armed forces until now. My son is about to follow in his great grandfather's footsteps and sign up.
My father however was a conscientious objector during the Second World War and instead of military service had to work for two years as a hospital orderly.
